Klamath River Fish Story

The fish that I am holding was caught (by hand!) one night at the Klamath river in northern California. My buddy (standing  next to me) Perry Swisher and I were the only "fly fishermen" in the trailer park and were continually being told by "bait fishermen" that it was impossible to catch a salmon on a fly.  So.....one evening while we were fishing for "steelhead" at the green riffle, I felt this bump on the back of my leg late that evening (in the dark) and jumped about 20 feet straight up........ After getting myself under control thinking that it might be a shark that had traveled upstream just to attack me, I yelled at Perry and said .... hey, look at this thing that come back downstream. Perry very quickly reminded me that the fellows in the park always said that you could never catch a Salmon on a fly (Perry was never one to let any opportunity for a joke go unnoticed) and that I should take it back with us and tell them that I caught the thing on a "Silver Hilton Fly".
I told Perry that I would not be able keep a straight face........he said, by darn I can......so he took it with us back to the park and by damn if he didn't tell the biggest fish story you ever heard, it was really a fantastic/great story, he had me even believing him. The next day everyone came by to see it, even the local fishermen got involved and the trailer park owner Jim Slusser (who was one of our fly fishing buddies) put the picture on the trailer park bulletin board. Everything was fine for two years until Perry mentioned the joke to his wife and she told Jim... (  you know, how "yappy" women are ) and he was so mad he took the picture down and would not talk to either Perry or me for most of that season. I really thought a lot about taking his wife Mamie fishing that night and using her for "shark bait" .......... :o)  Perry and Mamie are now fishing with the LORD!
