Arms....food for thought.
"Also, it would seem that Betsy
Ross'--she, of Old Glory fame--had a second husband (Mr. Ross passed in his
twenties), one Joseph Ashburn, and the U.S. flag bears a remarkable
resemblance to at least one version of the Ashburn coat of arms. Since
the provenance of Old Glory is subject to much speculation and little fact,
this might be a plausible explanation for the stars and bars motif. "
